The Mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Liz Durham visited Tytherington School on Monday 18th January to meet with the Student Parliament and members of the Year 7 Advanced Learners Programme.  The students quizzed the Mayor on a range of issues including her views on the purpose of education and why she entered local Politics. Perhaps the question which generated most excitement was when she was asked about her views on local regeneration.

Emmanuel Botwe, Headteacher, also outlined his future plans for the school to the Mayor. He said: “There is a very clear focus on delivering high academic standards for all as well as encouraging all students to strive to fulfil their potential wherever their interests or talents may lie”. He added: “This is already a strong school at the heart of the community. We make no apology for emphasising good old-fashioned courtesy and manners. Meeting the local Mayor is in keeping with a key priority for us which is providing students with opportunities to develop student leadership skills through extensive links with the local community”.

Student Parliament stalwart Holly Brockbank (Year 9) added: “It was great to meet the Mayor of Macclesfield and ask her about what the role involves. It is great to get her support for what we are doing in school.”

The visit of Mayor of Macclesfield is part of an incredibly packed start to the new school term. Mr Botwe said: “It has been a packed fortnight including mock examinations for our 6th Form, processing a record number of applications for our A-Level courses, the Advanced Learners producing an edition of Bollington Live and the launch of the “Tenner Challenge” which provides year 7s with an opportunity to build a social enterprise business with the loan of £10 from the school”.

The Mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Liz Durham  added: “I was very pleased to accept the invitation to visit the school and meet the students. I had a most interesting time with the children I met, all of whom were engaged and enthusiastic.”
