A school has netted a former football coach and talent manager to help its pupils and staff excel. Tytherington School has teamed up with Pete Lowe, former head of performance at Manchester City Football Club. Pete, who was a former PE teacher before working in football, plans to translate some lessons from the Premiership into the world of education. Pete, who founded his own training company First Team Ltd, spent more than 13 years in the Premiership and helped create 39 first team players and 25 international footballers. First Team Ltd provides businesses with performance strategies developed in the competitive world of premier league football. Pete will now introduce similar strategies to school pupils to help them understand what it takes to succeed and to give them the edge in their future careers.

Headteacher Manny Botwe, who joined the school in September last year, will be working with Pete to focus on the school’s ambitions and build on its existing achievements. Mr Botwe said that academic performance was key for him but that he placed an equal emphasis on creating ‘a culture of restless ambition, strong values and greater connectivity with the local community’. He said: “Pete’s belief in an unrelenting commitment to continuous improvement is really exciting and motivating and he is helping us to hold a mirror up to ourselves. “He is encouraging us to be brave enough to think differently and imaginatively about the way we do things.” He added: “it is about drawing on the solid foundation we already have in place and continually raising the bar. Pete’s enthusiasm really is contagious and he has real potential to influence the whole school.”

Pete Lowe said: “Manny is a headteacher who believes in leading by example who has the vision and the energy to learn from other sectors and translate these insights into the school environment, which is a breath of fresh air. “I’m working with his team to develop a culture of empowerment, encouraging people to challenge the accepted, which will inspire the students to become tomorrow’s leaders.”
