Returning on the 19th April – Face Masks Update
16th April 2021

Dear Families,

I hope you are well and are enjoying a restful Easter break. Before the end of last term, I promised that I would update you on the government’s position in relation to the wearing of masks in the classroom. On Tuesday 6th April, the government confirmed that face coverings should continue to be worn in secondary school and college classrooms as a precautionary measure when students return after the Easter holiday. The dropping of the requirement for face masks in secondary classrooms is not expected until 17th May at the earliest. In line with the government guidance, we will continue to require students to wear face coverings in the classroom.

As a rule of thumb, students should wear masks when they are inside the school buildings and can remove them when they are outdoors. Most lesson changeovers involve students going outside so this will help. Of course, we will re-iterate the need to wash and sanitise.

The overwhelming majority of students are already used to wearing masks in school but I am aware that there are a small number who are exempt for health reasons. If you feel that your child should be exempt, please e-mail Mr Pepper who maintains a list of exempt staff and students which is regularly disseminated to staff. You can make contact with Mr Pepper via: dpepper@tytheringtonschool.co.uk.

We know that there are members of staff and students who rely on lip-reading so we will continue to take this into consideration in terms of implementing this policy.

If you have any questions or queries then please do not hesitate to make contact with me.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Botwe
