Over the past few weeks, the sodalitas of the Classics Society have been making news reports on the death and legacy of Augustus. The videos were an absolute triumph as our members dealt with the complex events of Augustus’ illustrious career and complicated legacy with eloquence, erudition and élan (especially in the case of our roving reporter – Georgius of Gaul). The students spent two sessions discussing and digesting the events of Augustus’ life, from his adoption by Julius Caesar to his deathbed in Nola in 14 A.D. taking in his battles and political coups, proscriptions and rebuilding of Rome along the way.

The students spoke with accuracy, they performed with poise and they added humour and wit to their accounts, showing that in terms of the Classics, Tytherington clearly has some Tom Hollands and Mary Beards in the making.

Well done to all our participants! We hope you enjoy watching the videos of the news reports here:

We will be continuing our investigations next week with a discussion into the career of Augustus’ successor, the emperor Tiberius, leading to a debate on whether he really wished to hold the power which was thrust upon him.
